From the Frontlines: Huru’s Push For Spring Break Support

Velnah Morang’a, Huru Programs Officer, describes the need on site at a Huru distribution.

A note from Velnah…

Today, among the bustle of Mlolongo Primary School in the heart of Machakos County, a sea of young faces surrounds me. The air is filled with anticipation and a bit of worry—there are so many eager young girls with so much apprehension about what we carry in our hands: Huru Kits, their solution to uninterrupted education and dignity.

A bright-eyed girl from 7th grade approaches me, staring at the box of kits."Will there be one for me?" her eyes seem to ask, it’s the same silent question I see on the faces of the other girls in the schoolyard. As I look at the large group of girls, I know that today, for too many, the answer is uncertain. We brought 100 kits here last week and returned today with more, but the need here is in the hundreds. And there are so many more schools just like Mlolongo Primary with girls that need our help.

It's a hard reality that we see all the time at Huru, and it keeps us determined to help as many girls as we can. As we move through the crowd, handing out Huru Kits, the need is palpable in every ‘thank you’ and in every girl who turns away empty-handed. This is why I'm reaching out to you now, from the frontlines of this daily struggle.

We have set a big goal—reach 1,000 girls with Huru Kits before they go on Spring Break.

This isn't just a number; it's a thousand lives changed, a thousand educations continued uninterrupted, and a thousand futures reclaimed free from period stigma and taboo.

The clock is ticking as Spring Break approaches—a time that should be a carefree month off from school. But for these girls, it's a stark reminder of the monthly struggle they face. We're committed to fighting period poverty, but we can't do it alone.

Please join us in this urgent mission to make sure 1,000 girls can experience a carefree Spring Break as it should be—free from worry and full of possibility.

Thank you for your support,

Velnah Morang’a and the Huru Programs team 💜
